Have you ever found yourself worrying about the future? Some of us worry if we will ever be married, and some of us worry about staying married. We can worry about our jobs, children, safety, security, etc. Some people say that 80% of what we worry about will never happen. This is good and all, but what about the 20% that does happen? More things to worry about.
When we find ourselves stumbling down the worry valley, we can pull out of it rather quickly if we learn how to steady ourselves. This steadiness isn’t built on some self-help method of repeating the same things over and over while hoping that it will sink in one day. Our complete and solid foundation of resisting worry is steadfastly rooted in our knowledge of God.
First, we think about who God was in the Bible and recognize how He showed Himself faithful from Genesis to Revelation. Afterwards, we begin to meditate on what He has done to show Himself faithful to us in our present day lives and situations. Lastly, we think about His promise to one day take us to heaven to live eternally in joy and peace.
After we steadied ourselves about who God was, is, and will be, we began to thank Him for His many blessings over our lives. Our time of thankfulness is followed by our request or petition that we need from Him. This prayer is made in the light of God’s faithfulness. We lay our desires at the foot of the cross and turn our thoughts towards everything that is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy.
This regular practice takes a little time at first; however, the discipline of it will strengthen your resolve to steady yourself. The Lord will guard your heart and mind so that you will be filled with peace that you don’t even understand.
